Did you knit in public today?

Filed under my life by sherriknits at 5:35 pm on Jun 09 2007

We had a great time today, World-wide Knit in Public Day!

I think there were about 10 of us off and on today hanging out together and knitting in a little coffee and popcorn shop.  Celia, the shop owner, was so gracious and really enjoyed having us because we were ‘well-behaved’.   She even stood on a chair to take our picture.

What I love about knitters is that they are so willing to help each other.  Here is Linda helping Patty figure out her gauge.  We all know who to ask for help because Linda is never without her calculator and ruler.  Amber and Bunni are just enjoying visiting with each other.

I loved seeing all the fellowship, too.  I posed the question that I wondered if there is any other kind of community out there that will draw together the way knitters do.  I am so amazed that people like Claudia can raise so much for MS and Stephanie for Tricoteuses Sans Frontières (Knitters Without Borders) which supports Doctors Without Borders.  We decided there must be other kinds of groups out there but we don’t know about them and they probably don’t know about us.  I’m proud to be part of something so big and caring, though.

Shanda, Julie, me, Pam and Amber towards the end of the day.

It was just so cozy.

I had fun learning to do a short-row heel…needs practice!  I was steered to a website by a new friend in Wisconsin and showed it to Julie who mastered it and is now teaching me.  Thanks, Julie and Sandy!   I need to be careful and not yank the needle out of the stitches, though.

All in all, a fun day. I left my phone on the counter at my shop with a note to call my cell phone.  I only had to leave once for that purpose and what was cool about that was I had several things happen when I was there so I took care of all my business at once and then got to go back and knit.  I may try that again later in the summer if we decide to sit outside when the weather is nice.

I even made progress on my Tofutsie sock.

I hope you got a chance to KIP at least for a little bit today!

Oops, I almost forgot….here is Saturday sky, and you can see why we sat inside today.

    Sherri,
What a lovely day. I celebrated on my own and was so proud when my 17 year old daughter sent me a text message from a date saying she was knitting in public. Woot! A new generation.

I had to work until 6pm last night but during my lunchtime I knit as always…just wish someone at work knew how to knit but they aren’t even interested….they love to see what I am doing but don’t want to even give it a try at it….sadly, I ripped out my Panda Wool sock as I didn’t care for the pattern…I am going to try again today.

You had a riot too! I can tell with all the smiling faces. There was 8 of us. People would walk by and smile knod…one gentleman thanked us for keeping a great (he said) lost art going…if he only knew how many of us are out there…but the sentiment was true!! So much fun!

I did knit in public yesterday… I’m always knitting while taking transit, and spend over 2 hours on buses and subways yesterday. I did get a few people turning heads, finding it odd that I’m knitting not only in public but during the summer too, which I didn’t mind :) Much great feedback! AND I managed to finish a pair of socks!

Hey you ladies look like you had a good time too. We had about 35 people with us for KIP, but in your part of the world it was summer. Sydney Aus has had such a drought, and this is only the second we weekend all year, and of course it happened on KIP day, whatever! knitters are hardy people.
group hugs to your friends Sherri,

I love your pictures at the Cafe. I had such a great time, I think we need to do this more often. Can’t wait til Tuesday night!

Looks like a good time! I didn’t manage to KIP on Saturday and I feel like I must have missed out on a lot!

There are two or three of us knitters who meet for a cup of tea, cake and knit and chat, they are great. I always have socks on the go which are great for knitting from home.

It looks like you all had a nice time. Keep practicing that short row heel. I rarely knit any other heel anymore. This one seems to go so much faster.

It looked like you all had a fun time at WWKIP day! I sure wish that I could have joined you (I’ll have to plan my schedule better next year…)

And you’ll have to direct me to the short row heel information sometime, I’d like to try it
